My First Heart-Shaped Mess
I first made these hearts for my grandson. He was six. We had more jam on our faces than in the pastries. I still laugh at that. Cooking is not about being perfect. It is about the fun you have along the way.
These strawberry hearts are so simple. You just need puff pastry, jam, and love. The recipe is easy to follow. You can find a great strawberry jam recipe here if you want to make your own. Doesn’t that smell amazing when it bakes? What was your first baking memory?
Why Little Hands Love This
This matters because it builds confidence. A child can press the cookie cutter. They can spoon the jam. They see their creation turn golden. It is magic. That feeling stays with them for life.
It is also a lovely way to share time. No screens, just talking and creating. You could even make a whole strawberry feast! Try a refreshing strawberry mango smoothie to drink alongside. Do you like to bake with someone special?
The Secret to a Flaky Heart
Here is a fun fact for you. The flaky layers in puff pastry are made with butter. The dough is folded many times. When it bakes, the butter steams. This makes hundreds of thin, crispy layers. *Fun fact: that process is called “laminating” the dough.*
Do not worry. We use store-bought pastry. It works beautifully. The key is to keep it cold. If it gets too warm, it gets sticky. Just pop it in the fridge for a few minutes. Have you ever tried making pastry from scratch?
More Than Just a Pretty Treat
This matters for another reason. It teaches you not to waste. The recipe says to gather the scraps. You roll them out again to make more hearts. Nothing is thrown away. I love that.
Strawberries are such a happy fruit. They work in so many things. If you have extra, a classic Amish strawberry pie is a wonderful choice. Or, for a real adventure, you could make a Disney-style Dole Whip at home! What is your favorite way to eat strawberries?
Your Turn to Create
Now, it is your kitchen. Your story. These hearts are not just for Valentine’s Day. They are for any day that needs a little sweetness. Serve them warm with a dusting of sugar. Pure joy.
You can change the jam flavor too. Raspberry is lovely. You could even add a dollop of lemon curd. For another heart-shaped idea, these strawberry jam Linzer hearts are gorgeous. Will you stick with strawberry or try a new jam?
Instructions
Step 1: First, get your oven warm and happy. Unroll that puff pastry sheet. Use a heart cutter to make shapes. Place them on a baking tray. I still smile seeing those little hearts lined up.
Step 2: Now, take a smaller cutter. Press it gently into each heart to make a border. Don’t cut all the way through! This makes a little nest for the jam. (A light touch is key here.)
Step 3: Spoon some strawberry jam into the center. Add a fresh strawberry slice. Doesn’t that look pretty? What’s your favorite jam flavor? Share below! (Too much jam will bubble over, trust me!)
Step 4: Brush the edges with egg wash. Then, sprinkle them with sugar. This makes them shiny and golden. Bake until they are puffed and perfect. Your kitchen will smell amazing.
Step 5: Let them cool just a bit. Finally, dust them with powdered sugar. It looks like a light snowfall. You can serve them warm or cold. Both are wonderful.

Serving & Pairing Ideas
Serve these warm hearts with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The mix of hot and cold is magic. Or, enjoy them with a glass of cold strawberry lemonade for a sweet drink pairing. For a fancy brunch, place them on a pretty plate with fresh berries. Which would you choose tonight?

Keeping Your Strawberry Hearts Happy
Let’s talk about storing these sweet treats. Once cool, place them in a single layer. Use an airtight container. They will be fine on the counter for a day. For longer, the fridge is your friend. They will keep for about three days there.
You can freeze them before baking too. Assemble the hearts on a tray. Freeze them solid, then bag them up. Bake straight from the freezer, adding a few minutes. I once forgot a batch in my freezer for a month. They baked up perfectly for a surprise guest!
Why does this matter? Good storage means no waste. It also means a sweet treat is always ready. Batch cooking lets you share joy anytime. Have you ever tried storing it this way? Share below! You can find more sweet ideas, like this Amish strawberry pie, for your next baking day.
Little Fixes for Common Kitchen Hiccups
First, a soggy bottom. This happens if the jam overflows. Use just a small spoonful in the center. I remember when my first batch leaked everywhere. It was a sticky mess! Next, pastry not puffing. Your pastry must be cold going into the hot oven.
Finally, burnt edges but raw middle. Your oven might be too hot. An oven thermometer helps a lot. Why fix these issues? It builds your cooking confidence. Your food will also taste and look much better. Which of these problems have you run into before? For a no-bake option, try these strawberry lemon marshmallows instead.

Flaky Strawberry Heart Pastries
Description
Easy and adorable strawberry-filled puff pastry hearts, perfect for a sweet treat.
Ingredients
Instructions
- Preheat Fan oven to 160C/330F (for conventional oven, 180C/356F).
- Unroll the puff pastry sheet and dust it with some plain flour if it is too sticky. Cut out the heart as much as possible using a medium-sized cookie cutter and place them on a baking paper lined baking tray.
- Next, use the smaller heart shape cookie cutter and gently make an impression of a heart in the middle of each larger heart. Press it gently because you only need an indention into the larger hearts.
- Spoon some strawberry jam in the middle part of each pastry heart (smaller one). Top it off with fresh slices of strawberries. Don’t overfill the hearts with jam as it may ooze out from the sides when baking.
- Brush the edges of hearts with an egg wash (whisk together 1 egg+ 1 tsp milk).
- Sprinkle some sugar on top to get the beautiful golden brown colour. You can also add a tsp of freeze-dried strawberry powder in sugar but it’s optional.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes or until flakey and golden brown in colour.
- Let them cool slightly then sprinkle some icing sugar/powdered sugar.
- Serve warm or chill them in the fridge before serving.
- Gather the puff pastry scrap and roll it again between two pieces of baking paper. Lightly sprinkle the flour if it is sticky. Cut out more hearts and repeat the process.
