My First Kitchen Campfire
I remember my first kitchen s’more. It was a rainy night. My grandson was sad our campout was canceled. So we made our own campfire inside. We used the oven broiler. His smile when that marshmallow puffed up was everything. I still laugh at that.
This matters because joy doesn’t need perfect weather. It just needs a little creativity. And chocolate, of course! Doesn’t that smell amazing? Have you ever had to change your plans and make fun inside instead? I’d love to hear your story.
Why The Broiler Is Your Friend
The broiler is like a mini sun in your oven. It sits at the top. It gives quick, direct heat. This is perfect for toasting marshmallows fast. But you must watch it closely. It can go from golden to gone in seconds!
Fun fact: The word “broil” comes from an old word meaning “to burn.” So stay put! This matters because cooking teaches us patience and attention. Good things come to those who watch. For another treat that needs a watchful eye, try this white chocolate fudge recipe.
The Great Chocolate Debate
You can use any chocolate you love. Milk chocolate is classic. Dark chocolate is rich. White chocolate is sweet. My neighbor once used peanut butter cups. It was a game-changer! The melted peanut butter was so good.
This is your creation. Pick what makes you happy. That’s the real secret. Would you rather use classic milk chocolate or try something wild like caramel chocolate? Tell me your pick!
Building Your S’more Tower
First, lay your cracker on a tray. I like digestive biscuits sometimes for a different taste. Add the chocolate piece. Then, crown it with a marshmallow. Don’t put the top cracker on yet. That comes after the broiler.
Slide the tray under the heat. Watch the magic. The marshmallow will swell and turn gold. The chocolate will get soft. It’s a tiny science experiment in your oven. When it’s done, press the top on gently. That gooey smash is the best part. For more gooey goodness, hot cocoa cookies are a must-try.
More Than Just a Snack
This matters because food is about connection. Making s’mores together creates a little moment of shared happiness. It’s simple. It’s sweet. It reminds us to enjoy the small things. Like making fluffy homemade vanilla marshmallows for next time.
So gather your people. Make a plate of s’mores. Share stories. What’s your favorite memory of making something fun in the kitchen? Was it cookies, or maybe something else? If you love cookie recipes, these peanut butter pretzel cookies are a crunchy delight. And for more cozy fun, these personalized camping ornaments can keep the spirit alive all year.
Instructions
Step 1: First, turn your oven’s broiler on. Let it get nice and hot. I always preheat my baking sheet, too. It gives the bottom cracker a little head start. Doesn’t that smell amazing? (A warm pan helps the chocolate melt faster.)
Step 2: Now, build your s’mores bases. Place crackers on the hot tray. Top each with chocolate and a marshmallow. I still laugh at how my grandson stacks them sky-high. Milk or dark chocolate—which is your favorite? Share below! Try using homemade marshmallows for extra magic.
Step 3: Carefully slide the tray into the oven. Watch them like a hawk! Broilers work very fast. Peek after just one minute. You want golden, puffy marshmallows. (Never walk away—they burn in a blink!)
Step 4: Time for the grand finale! Pull the tray out. Quickly top each with another cracker. Gently press down. Enjoy the glorious, gooey mess immediately. They pair perfectly with a glass of cold milk or a hot cocoa cookie.
Creative Twists
Peanut Butter Cup Twist: Swap the chocolate for a peanut butter cup. It’s so good!
Biscoff Cookie Base: Use Biscoff cookies instead of graham crackers. You’ll love the caramel taste.
Fudge Drizzle: Add a swirl of easy white chocolate fudge on top after baking.

Serving & Pairing Ideas
Serve these s’mores on a big plate for sharing. A scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side is heavenly. For a fun crunch, add some pretzel bits to the plate. It reminds me of camping trips. Which would you choose tonight?

Keeping Your S’mores Perfect for Later
These oven s’mores are best fresh. But sometimes you make too many. I understand that completely. Place any extras on a plate. Do not stack them. Let them cool completely first. This keeps the chocolate from sticking. Then you can wrap them up.
For the fridge, wrap each one in a little parchment paper. They will keep for two days. The marshmallow gets a bit firm. For the freezer, use a sealed container. They can last a month there. Thaw them on the counter for an hour. I remember my first batch. I put warm s’mores in a box. What a sticky mess we had to clean up.
To reheat, use your toaster oven or regular oven. A few seconds under the broiler brings them back to life. Batch cooking means sweet treats are always ready. It turns a regular Tuesday into something special. Have you ever tried storing it this way? Share below!
Easy Fixes for Common S’mores Snags
Broilers can be tricky. Your marshmallow might brown too fast. If this happens, move your tray lower in the oven. I once burned a whole tray because I got distracted. Now I set a timer for one minute. I always watch them like a hawk after that.
Chocolate not melting enough? Your biscuit might be too thick. Try breaking your chocolate into smaller pieces first. You can also use chocolate chips. They melt very quickly and easily. Another issue is a soggy bottom cracker. This happens if you assemble them too early. Always build your s’mores right before they go in the oven.
Fixing these small issues builds your cooking confidence. You learn how your own oven works. It also makes the flavor perfect every time. You get that ideal gooey middle. Which of these problems have you run into before? For more chocolatey ideas, try these hot cocoa cookies.
Your Quick Questions, Answered
Can you make s’mores in the oven?
Yes, you absolutely can. Use your oven’s broiler setting. It toasts the marshmallow from above. This gives you that classic campfire toast. Place your cracker, chocolate, and marshmallow on a tray. Watch it closely for one to three minutes. The broiler works very fast. You get a melted, gooey treat without any smoke. It is my favorite indoor method.
How do you make s’mores in the oven without graham crackers?
You can use many other things. Digestive biscuits work wonderfully. You can also try crispy cookies. Shortbread or peanut butter cookies are great. Even plain pretzels can be a fun, salty base. The key is a sturdy item that won’t get too soft. Top it with chocolate and a marshmallow. Broil as usual for a delicious twist.
What is the quickest way to make s’mores indoors?
The quickest way is using a microwave. Assemble one s’more on a plate. Microwave it for about ten seconds. Watch the marshmallow puff up. The chocolate will melt quickly too. It is not as toasted, but it is very fast. For a toasted taste, the broiler is best. It only takes a few minutes more. Fun fact: A marshmallow can double in size in the microwave!
Can you make s’mores in a toaster oven?
A toaster oven is perfect for s’mores. Use the broil setting if it has one. If not, use a high bake setting. It works just like a big oven. The small space might cook them even faster. Make just one or two for a small snack. Keep the door open a crack to watch them. This prevents burning your sweet treat.
How do you make s’mores for a crowd in the oven?
Use a large baking sheet. Line it with parchment paper for easy cleanup. You can fit many s’mores bases on one tray. Let everyone choose their chocolate. You could even set out white chocolate fudge pieces. Broil the whole tray at once. Have the top crackers ready. Let people assemble their own. It turns into a fun party activity.
What can I use instead of a campfire for s’mores?
Your kitchen has many options. The oven broiler is the best for toastiness. A gas stove burner works with a long fork. A candle can toast one marshmallow slowly. A kitchen torch gives you great control. For a fun project, make homemade marshmallows first. Then use any of these methods. You can have s’mores any time of year. Which tip will you try first?

Easy Oven S’mores in Minutes
Description
Make classic s’mores in minutes using your oven’s broiler for a gooey, melty, and delicious treat.
Ingredients
Instructions
- Turn the oven on to the broiler setting.
- On an ovenproof tray or baking pan place a graham cracker down, then top it with a piece of chocolate to mostly over the surface of the biscuit, then place a marshmallow on the center. Repeat as many times as you like, do not worry about the top of the smores you will add that once the bottom half has been cooked.
- Place your baking tray in the oven underneath the broiler, shut the door, and check back in a minute. I would guess it will take 2-3 minutes but depending on how close your tray sits to the broiler the marshmallows will brown quicker or take longer. If you want to be sure you could do one smores first and time it and see how long it takes, the thing with a broiler is it will turn from not cooked to burned very quickly so this is not the type of thing you can walk away from and come back to.
- Top the toasted marshmallow with another piece of graham cracker or biscuit and press down slightly to smash the gooey marshmallow and melted chocolate all together. Enjoy immediately.
Notes
- For added flavor, top with spicy Sriracha mayo, mango salsa, or use marinated tofu for a vegetarian option.
