Your Quick Questions, Answered

How to make Guinness stew in a slow cooker

You can make this Irish beef stew recipe in a slow cooker. Brown your meat and onions first. Then add everything except the cornstarch to the pot. Cook on low for 8 hours. It will be very tender. Mix your cornstarch with broth at the end. Stir it in and cook for 20 more minutes to thicken.

Can you make beef stew without Guinness

Yes, you can make beef stew without Guinness. Use more beef broth instead. The stew will still be delicious. You will miss the deep, rich flavor the beer adds. But it is still a wonderful quick beef stew. Try a dark non-alcoholic beer if you want a similar taste. The recipe is very forgiving.

What is the secret to tender beef stew

The secret is time and moisture. Cooking the meat low and slow in liquid makes it tender. Our pressure cooker beef stew uses steam to do this fast. Do not rush the natural pressure release. Those extra minutes let the meat relax. Always cut your beef into even pieces. This way everything cooks the same.

How to thicken Guinness beef stew

We use a cornstarch slurry. Whisk cornstarch with cold broth. Stir it into the hot stew at the end. Let it simmer for a minute or two. The broth will turn shiny and thick. You can also mash a few potatoes against the pot side. This creates a natural thickness. Both ways work great for this Guinness beer stew.

What to serve with Guinness beef stew

Serve it with crusty bread for dipping. A simple green salad is nice for balance. I love it with The Best Kale Caesar Salad for a hearty meal. For St. Patrick’s Day recipes, add some soda bread. A dark chocolate dessert, like a Guinness flourless chocolate cake, finishes the feast perfectly.

Traditional Irish stew vs Guinness beef stew

Traditional Irish stew is often made with lamb or mutton. It uses simple potatoes, onions, and broth. Our Instant Pot beef stew uses beef and rich Guinness. It has carrots and tomato paste for deeper flavor. Both are cozy, but the Guinness version is darker and richer. *Fun fact: Traditional Irish stew was called a “stew” only after potatoes came to Ireland.*
